Chance To Go For Gold At Maryborough's 150th Birthday

It seems that each week this year, some place in Victoria is celebrating its 150th anniversary. This weekend the former goldrush town of Maryborough is commemorating its naming day.

Community groups and organisations are holding various events this weekend. There are markets, exhibitions, displays, open days and reunions.

This year is also significant for Maryborough's public schools. This may be the last opportunity for former students of the two public primary schools to visit their old buildings, because next year they will be merged into one at the new Maryborough Education Precinct on the edge of the town.

Both the Maryborough East Primary School and Maryborough Primary School will be involved in the town's 150th anniversary celebrations, with each inviting past students to their open days and displays.

All of Maryborough's schools will be open this weekend.

The fine arts exhibition 3465 (named after the postcode) celebrates the work of past and present artists from the Maryborough area. Artists featured include Phillip Adams and Dean Bowen as well as more than 20 others. The exhibition runs until August 9.

Other events include gold-panning tours and a woodworking exhibition.

There is also a radio exhibition and a 3CV reunion at the Maryborough Golf Club. Amateur radio clubs will be talking to the world with a special station set up on site.

Tomorrow at the Maryborough railway station is the noted Market Affair. There will be more than 40 stalls, with dealers and collectors selling antiques, old wares, country crafts and wines. The market is open from 9am to 4pm. -- Andrew Murfett
