THE famed three-day Redwood carnival at Maryborough in Victoria gets under way on Friday.
Comprising two all-trotting meetings, the carnival starts with an eight-race program on Friday afternoon. The feature event is the $6000 Harness Racing International Gold Bracelet for three-year-old fillies.The 20th running of the $30,000 group 3 Redwood Classic for two-year-old trotters, supported by the $60,000 group 1 Harness Racing International Victoria Trotters' Derby, features on the 10-race program on Sunday.A car dealership is offering a $10,000 bonus for any trainer who prepares three winners at the meeting, but must include either the Redwood or derby as one of the wins.The Saturday program starts at 10am with a harness sale at Carisbrook Raceway followed by Australia's only exclusive trotters' auction at noon and a dinner dance that evening.Maryborough Harness Racing Club secretary Les Chapman said the Redwood carnival program was well established and the club did not see a need to deviate from the successful recipe."It promises to be another great trotting carnival, and I would like to make special mention of the Victorian Bookmakers' Association, which has provided $3000 in betting vouchers to assist in promoting Redwood Day to social clubs and organisations in the local area," he said.The United States Trotting Association reports that American harness racing legend Stanley Dancer is under medical supervision because of chronic back injuries.The Hall of Fame trainer of such greats as Albatross, Nevele Pride and Most Happy Fella, is not eating much and continues to lose weight.He is surrounded by memories from his unparalleled racing career, and his wife Jody hopes the sport will continue to remember her husband.The condition of injured Victorian reinswoman Jodi Quinlan is slowly improving after a shocking fall at Geelong three weeks ago, although doctors are still to determine the source of her pain.
